Frequently asked questions

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why should I apply for external scholarships? As Quinnites, we have an obligation to be servant leaders. One of the ways in which we define servant leadership is demonstrating economic leadership. Applying for, and securing, external scholarships is one example of economic leadership. Scholarships will reduce your loan debt and free up institutional funds for other students and purposes.

Scholarships help to reduce the amount of loans you and your parents are asked to secure and dramatically reduce the amount of money you will be required to repay. Also, an earned scholarship is one more great accomplishment to add to your resume and thereby makes you more competitive when applying for internships and scholarships.

Why do athletes have to apply for four scholarships? We consider our student-athletes to be leaders on our campus. Leaders are always required to do more than others. Additionally, the more successful our student-athletes are in securing scholarships, the more resources the College will have to improve athletic facilities. This is a win-win for everyone.

Will I be penalized if I don’t receive any of the external scholarships funds I applied for?No. While the primary goal of this policy is to help you receive additional funding, it is impossible to guarantee that you will be awarded every scholarship you seek.

What if I am awarded a scholarship after I have taken out loans and applied for financial aid? Your scholarship money will be applied to your bill for that semester. We can return the funds you received from financial aid and loans up to the amount of the scholarship award. This will reduce your loan burden.

What if I applied for external scholarships during the fall? Do I still need to apply for scholarships during the spring? Yes. However, any scholarships that you applied for after the end of the fall semester (November 20), but before the beginning of the spring semester, can be counted towards your spring semester requirement.

I am currently receiving a scholarship from Paul Quinn College; will the scholarship be taken away if I don’t apply for the required number of external scholarships?Yes.

I am graduating in May. Do I have to apply for external scholarships during the spring semester? No.

I am applying for scholarships on my own; do I still need to attend a scholarship counseling session? Yes. Your assigned counselor needs to review your list of scholarships to ensure you are selecting scholarships that are a best fit for you and that offer you the maximum amount of scholarship funds you are eligible to receive.

My work schedule does not permit me to come to scholarship counseling sessions. Can I be excused from this requirement? Students with busy schedules should talk with their assigned counselor about making alternative arrangements for scholarship counseling sessions.

Can I apply for scholarships not on the list developed with my scholarship counselor? You may apply for additional scholarships; however, you must apply for two scholarships from the list approved by your counselor at your session.

Will I be fined if I turn in my proof of scholarship applications later in the day on the deadline? Yes, you will be fined $200 because the deadline is 5:30 p.m. on November 13 in the fall semester and April 23. In terms of this program, the next day begins at 5:31 p.m.

Can my friends and I have an informal scholarship application session on our own instead of attending a session with a scholarship counselor? No. However, if you and your friends would like to have a session with a counselor as a group, you may contact Ms. Williams or Ms. Wilson to set up an appointment.

What happens if I turn in one scholarship application proof by the deadline and the other after the deadline? You will be fined $200 because you did not submit all proof by the deadline.
